Getting a credit report can save you money in the long run, but most Americans don't even know why they should get one. Credit scores have been around for years but they have only recently become widely available due to the advent of the Internet, but plenty of people do not even know what they are. So why should you get a credit report?
Reason #1: Credit Cards
Your credit report shows you your credit score, which is a number that lets banks, credit unions, and other lenders know how well you have paid your debts off (and whether or not you paid them off on time) in the past. Credit card companies like banks will not give you cards with as high limits per month if you have bad credit, which means you will be more likely to overdraw and pay fees for spending more than you are allowed to. Worse yet, your card might get declined, which will be very embarrassing.
Reason #2: Cars
Car sellers, just like banks, will want to know what your credit score is before they give you a car loan. Because of this, they will check your credit score themselves and will give you a loan accordingly. People with bad credit are going to have to pay more money upfront than people with good credit. Therefore, it is important to know where you stand creditwise before you walk into the room. Car loans are usually hashed out in person and can be negotiated to a much greater extent than credit cards (especially in this economy where, until last month, people were not buying cars).
